Help Wanted…

…NFL offensive coordinator who wants to work under a lame duck coach, incompetent upper management, notoriously cheap owners, and doesn’t care about having a say in hiring his offensive staff.  Mostly likely a one season position with very small possibility for a second year, no third year.

Any takers??  Anyone at all?  Opportunity to work with Jay Cutler here people.  Anybody?  I guess not…how shocking.

If you didn’t find any of that funny you are either a member of the Bears organization or a die hard Bears fan.  While I think its more sad than funny, its is, unfortunately, the reality of what Lovie and Jerry are facing while trying to find an offensive coordinator.

As if it wasn’t going to be hard enough to find someone knowing that it may only be a one year gig, Lovie went ahead and started hiring the guy’s offensive staff for him.  The first thing a coordinator tells a GM and head coach after he takes a job (after BSing them about how excited he is to work with the players and for a great organization) is “I have some ideas for my position coaches.”  You think anyone is going to want this job now that those decisions have started to be taken away?

Don’t get me wrong, I actually really like the hiring of Mike Tice (offensive line coach).  I think it was a good hire and he would make a great addition to any coaching staff, not to mention a decent replacement for Lovie after next season.  But in addition to hiring him, Lovie promised him he would have some say in how the offense is structured.  Are you f__king serious!?!?!?  What are you going to tell a prospective coordinator?  “Hey, I know you probably have some good ideas for the offense but you have to run them buy your offensive line coach and make sure he is OK with them first.”  Really??  Really?? That’s what its come down to.  I firmly believe that the head coach and general manager should have a say in hiring of the position coaches, but I also firmly believe that a coordinator should be in place first and the three of them should make those decisions TOGETHER.

And this is a little bit of breaking news….as I was writing this I was doing some checking to make sure that the job hadn’t been filled yet (I don’t want to sound like an idiot) and I saw a notice that the Bears plan to interview a candidate for the tight end coach.  A guy named Mike Bebord.  Decent coach and, again, it wouldn’t be a bad choice but please, please, PLEASE HIRE  A DAMN COORDINATOR FIRST!  What if the best candidate for the coordinator job would rather not work with these guys or has worked with them in the past and it hasn’t worked out well?

“People will want to come here.”  Remember that?  That’s what Lovie said the Tuesday after the regular season when we all found out he was going to keep his job.  Still feel that way Lovie?  Probably not, but you’re as stubborn as they come so you would never admit it.  Hell, you still tell us that the swiss cheese zone (get it, haha) you call a defense can work even though there is no proof of that over the last three seasons.  Sorry, just venting some frustrations there.  But anyways,  it looks more likely that the US military will find Bin Laden in the caves of Afghanistan before the Bears find someone that actually wants this job.

If you read my article on the Blackhawks a couple days ago you may remember that I mentioned how that is a well run organization that has everything going in the right direction.  Well so far this off season the Bears have proven to be the exact opposite of that.  This offensive coordinator mess is just the latest step the “brain trust” has taken to make a joke out of this once proud franchise, and the only way to fix it is to clean house and start at the top.

and P.S., Lovie still has to find a defensive coordinator that wants to work with him…good luck.

Nothing to add here, all statements above are the sobering truth. Being a life long Bears fan I can only say that the franchise as a whole sucks at this point and is in total disarray. I think Virginia has gone senile on us and it may be time for her to sell the franchise and, Not To Michael! But to someone who knows how to run an NFL team.

I hate to be the one to break the bad news to you Dave, but this franchise will be in the hands of the McCaskey family for a long, LONG time. The NFL just changed the rules for passing on ownership within a family or business in the event the the owner dies or steps down. And unfortunately the rules make it much much easier than in years past. These rules were specifically put in place with Chicago and Pittsburgh in mind, both franchises with aging family owners and that have been owned by the same family since they formed. So unless one of these McCaskey boys can manage to finally dislodge his head from his ass, its going to be more of the same for years to come.

I know, you’re right. We can always hope though. The Halas’ made the Bear “franchise” what it is today, one of the foundations and founders of pro football with a legacy of winning and championships. But, without papa being around and a silver spoon daughter and grand kids in charge it’s getting humiliating. If papa was still around he would’ve cleaned house last year even though he always pinched pennies too. Unlike the Rooney family that had some football interested heirs the McCaskey’s are only interested in their investments. So until that changes the Bears will continue to flounder.
