Chicago Bears, the NFL’s Punchline

Its been a few days since I’ve torched the Bears management so I thought today might be a good day to take shot at them.  “The Bears need to hire a coordinator to organize their coordinator search.”  That zinger was complements of ESPNChicago’s Jeff Dickerson.  But its not just the Chicago media taking jabs at at the once proud franchise.  “I don’t know which one more guys have backed out of, the pro bowl or the Chicago Bears offensive coordinator job.”  That one comes from ESPN’s Adam Schefter on national television when asked about the Bears’ search for a coordinator.  Its nice to see that the shots are no longer localized and that the Bears are now a nationwide joke.

Its been 23 days since Lovie boldly said candidates would be lining up to come work here.  Here’s a little of what has taken place in that time period.  Lovie decided to hire Mike Martz to run the offense but Jerry Angelo said no (thank you Jerry, and I really mean that), they were denied permission to interview the Packers’ QB coach, they set there sites on USC’s Jeremy Bates only to have him follow Pete Carroll to Seattle, interviewed Ken Zampese of the Cincinnati Bengals (still haven’t heard anything more about that), interviewed Rob Chudzinski of the Chargers who chose to stay a lower ranking assistant with San Diego rather than take up step up with the Bears, and although there are reports he “didn’t exactly blow Lovie away” in the interview, he took himself out of the running for the job because Norv Turner just signed an extension so he has more job security there.  Then the rumors turned to Hue Jackson.  Pretty good NFL guy, a lot of experience, but he took the offensive coordinator job with the Raiders.  The F—ING RAIDERS!! He would rather work under Al Davis and deal with LaMarcus Russell than come to work with Lovie.  He didn’t even want to interview with Lovie.  That one stings a little.

So where does Lovie turn now?  Well, Kevin Rogers, the quarterbacks coach for the Minnesota Vikings, is interviewing with Lovie at Halas Hall today.  However, I doubt we will hear anything even remotely meaningful regarding that because now its rumored the Bears want to interview both Clyde Christensen, the Colts’ assistant head coach and receivers coach, and Terry Malone, the Saints’ tight ends coach, both of whom cannot be interview until after the Super Bowl and that’s assuming the Bears will be granted permission from each team.  Also, they are said to have an eye on several college coordinators, but they won’t be available until after the February 3rd signing day so coaching changes won’t affect recruiting classes.

Now where does that leave the Bears on there search for an offensive coordinator?  My answer to that is, who the hell knows.  They seem to be trying to avoid actually narrowing down a specific list of candidates and making a legitimate effort for those guys.  At this point it seems anyone that has ever coached football at any level is a candidate and could land an interview, if they want one that is.  Meanwhile, loyal Bears’ fans will remain frustrated and the national media will continue to make light of the situation.  I would just like to thank the entire McCaskey family, Ted Phillips, Jerry Angelo, and Lovie Smith for not only turning this franchise into the national punchline that it has become, but also for standing by and doing ABSOLUTELY NOTHING knowing all along that this was happening.

    Bear Down!

The franchise is in disarray right now, but we will be all drinking the kool aid come next year.

I am disappointed in the season, the choices that have been made, the position the Bears have left themselves in, but I don’t care about being a joke.

They are still the Bears and I am going to be hyped up and ready for next season when it comes.

Hell who needs an offensive coordinator anyway? I mean it isn’t like Lovie is going to let him make any decisions to begin with.

I can’t even comment on the bears anymore. It just makes me so upset to see how far this once proud franchise has fallen under the Phillips regime. And Adam, there aint gonna be any kool-ade to drink next year. This franchise right now is the laughing stock of the nfl. We’re talking years of recovery ahead and that’s after Phillips, Angelo & Smith are gone.

I don’t know if its possible, but I actually agree with both of you. Dave, you are absolutely right. What has happened to this franchise under the current regime is nothing short of embarrassing, and the worst part is that there is no foreseeable end in sight. But I also agree with Adam. We can’t do anything about the decisions that have already been made. All we can do is continue to root for our team and, when we have the opportunity, put our opinions out there for all to see – like on this site :) – and hope that eventually our cries will be heard. But until then, I will continue to be the die-hard fan I have always been and get hyped up and try to rationalize the ridiculously high hopes I have for this team just like I have done every other season.

Personally I think the bears need a back bone. These men are professionals playing like 3rd string players at a division III school. I love going to the games, the atmosphere, the beer, but the games are 2nd rate.

Being a die hard life long supporter and rooting for the Bears is cool but the embarrassment of the current state of this franchise won’t go away. Think Detroit Lions & New Orleans Saints of the past. It’s the same thing. Get your Paper bags out!! And Lord help us!!
