Oaken Barrel Brewing Company’s Snake Pit

Hey everybody welcome back to the Brew Review!

Today’s beer was a pretty good dark that I apparently got a little pour happy with, but I am not one to hide my mistakes as you can tell from the picture above. This is either the first or second of my Oaken Barrel reviews and you will see a few more popping up as @worldclass seemed to will them my way in their Indiana sample. So without further ado… Snake Pit Porter.

My Review

The Pour

Snake Pit poured really nicely, outside of my over-zealousness that got the head so thick that it ended up on my kitchen counter. It poured with a nice thick and yeasty looking tan head that dissolved when you started drinking it to a thin ring that laced the glass all the way down.

The Nose

On the nose you are going to have to bear with me, I am overcoming a sinus infection or something that has still got me a bit clogged. I was able to find a nice roasted malt smell, but little else.

The Palate

Snake pit hit me as a little too thin, but had awesome flavor! This Porter has set the stage for light to medium bodied dark beers. You are going to find great coffee and dark chocolate flavors mixed with something that reminded me of the grisliness on a perfectly burnt piece of chicken from the grill. You will know what I mean when you taste it. There is a bitter/charcoal/burnt/blackness that just tingles after the beer has left your mouth. Seriously it rocked.

I am not sure why you would ever be eating slightly charred grilled chicken while drinking a mocha flavored coffee beverage, but if you were put it all in your mouth, chew it up, and remember that flavor because it is exactly what you will find in Snake Pit.

If you could tell I really enjoyed this one and I hope that you guys get the chance to pick it up and taste it for yourself.

  1. Oaken Barrel apparently seems to be a good choice judging by your last 2 reviews! Its weird that they don’t have these in liquor stores if they are that good. You would think that they would be more popular especially since they are a Indiana brew.

      It was a pretty big surprise to me too. But the problem is that most of these Indiana microbrews are too small to create the amount needed to be distributed throughout the entire state.

      This year the guys need to make a guy trip to a brewery much like the ladies have a girl trip.

  2. I’m going to have to start looking for some of these brews when I got out to the store or when I’m at a place like Old Chicago that has a lot of beer selections available.

    I’d like to see a Fanbrew beer tasting celebration at some local establishment that offers a good selection of microbrews. I’d be a great way to try out some new offerings.

      Wiseguys on 93rd definitely has the best selection of craft brews, and Old Chicago is obviously great too.

      We are tasting at 2 of the local microbrews within the next month and are working on a promotion with Old Chicago. We will be out there trying to get into the minds of beer fans so we can do more cool stuff.

  3. Any thing with snakes on the bottle just peeked my intrest. Just by your review I am going to have to try it.

  4. Looks like a good porter. I doubt I’ll be able to try it until I make it out to IL/IN, but nonetheless it got my taste buds going?

    I was curious on your ‘too thin’ comment on the mouthfeel? Whenever I pour/look at/drink a porter, I always expect the mouthfeel to be full like a stout (not matter how I try to convince myself otherwise). When it’s not, I rate it as too thin. Sometimes I think we all misinterpret how a Porter-styled beer is meant to be. What are your thoughts on that?

      We let sight influence our reviews far to often, I completely agree. You see something dark with a frothy head and you want it to be thick and full bodied, but that just isn’t always the case is it?
