Murphy’s Draught Style Stout

Hello everbody and welcome back to the Brew Review!

Today’s episode has a 5 year old camera man that likes to respond to his dad, so be prepared for some chatter behind the camera. But more importantly than that I take on Murphy’s Draught Style Stout. I am admittedly a noob when it comes to Stouts as I brushed them off for years thinking that drinking motor oil like was beers for dummies. Turns out I was the dummy and expanding my palate with these thick dark beers has been an absolute pleasure and Murphy’s does not disappoint.

The Pour

As you can tell in the video Murphy’s pours very thick with a lot of bubble action, like Guinness the bubbles look like they are going down, but they are actually rising to the top if a more prevalent fashion. It is a widget can, which you can see from the pic on the right. I had to cut it open and see what made that crazy noise when I opened it. The widget I believe releases a Nitrogen gas allowing the drought style carbonation to be released. On the pour you get about a finger’s width in a dark mocha colored creamy head, and your glass is just filled with the pour black brew that doesn’t allow an light to get through it. Looks like exactly what I wanted something thick and dark to be drunk like the dessert I was looking for.

The Nose

The nose on Murphy’s was a big disappointment. I really got nothing other that a little sweetness from it, I was hoping for a big coffee aroma, but it just didn’t break through that foamy head for me.

The Palate

The palate came through big on the finish. At first I was like eh this is okay, not much happening, but after the swallow it really hits you with a great mocha coffee flavor. The bitterness of a dark chocolate mixed with a great coffee flavor really make Murphy’s quite delicious.

I drank it at probably 45 – 50 degrees since it was sitting on my porch that isn’t heated, I wish it was about room temperature as it would have really driven the coffee into effect. A really nice beer, if I would have gotten a better aroma from the nose probably would have been a 4.0, but since it lacked there and on the front of the palate Murphy’s scores 3.5 out of 5 beers.
