The Brew Review: Episode 8 Young’s Double Chocolate Stout Review

Hey Everybody, welcome back to the Brew Review. In today’s episode I dissect the flavors in Young’s Double Chocolate Stout, and guess what it tastes like chocolate. No real suprises to this one, but I did thoroughly enjoy it so let’s just dig right in.

The Pour

Young’s is dark and thick, but it actually pours a little thinner that you might expect it to be. The darkness is no joke though, you can’t see anything through it. You immediately get a big thick head with a frothy mocha colored foam gracing the top of the glass. And as you will see in the video it starts lacing immediately as some of the foam starts to dissapate right away.

The Nose

The nose smells like Nestle quick chocalate powder, but I get an extra bit of sweetness that reminds me of deep red fruit almost like a cherry.

The Palate

Young’s tastes like chocalate, it is no surprise. It’s dark chocolate malt body and flavor reminds me of baking chocolate leaving your mouth a little dry. There is some bitterness in there that reminds me slighty of coffee, but the overall flavor is just chocolate. I really enjoyed Young’s and would recommend it to anyone, beer lover or chocolate lover. Young’s gets one of my highest ratings on the site so far with 4.25 out of 5 beers.

Thanks Julie & Jason for all the great beers you got me for my birthday. I hope I can exchange the favor for Jason in September.

If you guys haven’t done it yet be sure to subscribe to our site or to our youtube channel. And leave me a comment below telling me what your favorite chocolate stout is.

    Adam,
I’d like to help you out but I haven’t had many stouts, especially chocolates. Guess I’m a boring beer drinker.

  2. This was the first Chocolate stout I had, it was at a great (and expensive) beer bar in Stavanger, Norway. WOW. Rocked my world.

My favorite now is Rogue Chocolate Stout. Mmm mmm good.

It is my first as well. I hear the Southern Tier brewing company has a great one too and I look forward to trying it.

And the guy Joe above is headed to France tomorrow you should tell him some places to get a good beer.

The Sam Adams Imperial Stout is a dark chocolate lovers dream. I however don’t like dark chocolate so that wasn’t for me. I do want to try Sam Adams Chocolate Bock. That one sounds so much better but I don’t even know where to begin looking for that one.

    Hi Adam,

I’m going to have to check out this brew.

Lately, I’ve been trying to focus on locally produced microbrews — I still need to get out to the LaPorte brew pubs as well as Figure 8.

The thing I’ve noticed is that drinking a light beer — something that would have seemed great a little while ago — is just boring after trying some of the great selections you’ve presented here as well as all of the great locally produced beers.

Can anyone go back to mass-produced consumer beer after being spoiled by high quality beers?
