Tiger Wood’s Press Conference

Tiger Woods today held an approximate thirty (35) minutes news conference with the media at Augusta National Golf Course, Home of The Masters Golf Tournament. Woods acknowledged his “transgressions” (I love this word) as “incredibly poor decisions.” He however did not give TMZ or the world any new insight into his personal life and why he entered rehab. He did however say that his wife Elin is not going to be attending.

What I love about Tiger is the fact that he remains a competitor. Tiger himself admits it’s reasonable for him to still win this tournament without playing a round of professional golf in nearly 5 months. Tiger credits the support of his fellow golfers and droves of fans that have been following his practice rounds. Tiger said, “The encouragement I got, it blew me away,” he said. “It really did. The people here over the years, I know they’ve been extremely respectful. But today is just something that touched my heart pretty good.”

Tiger’s new look (sporting a small goatee), new attitude, and new motivation is just what I need to root for Tiger. I do not condone his extramarital affairs, but I respect him for admitting his faults. Tiger’s “transgressions” hurt his family, fans, but also his image. Tiger needs to put on a great show at these Masters and do so with gusto. Winning is Tiger’s only path putting this scandal behind him and I think he can do it.

I saw an ad for the Masters and they had a split second shot of Tiger putting on the green jacket. I’m glad they didn’t cut him out — although they severely limited his visibility in the ad.

It’s good that Tiger is back on the scene since there’s nobody else who stands out as much as Tiger in golf.

In some ways, Tiger’s situation can show people that marriages can be worked out with lots of effort and hard work (or maybe that they can’t, if things between Elin and Tiger aren’t resolved, but that life goes on even if a marriage doesn’t work).

I have issues with marital infidelity no matter who it is, but there are two things I keep in mind when it comes to Tiger:

    1. It’s not my business.

    2. How he plays with one set of stick and balls does not affect how he plays with the other sticks and balls. He was an amazing golfer before he got married, and he’s an amazing golfer now.

While some of the enjoyment of watching him is now gone (nothing like rooting for the “good guy” who’s also got the skills), that doesn’t change that I like me some good golf! I always rooted for Davis Love III anyway.
