Well I am not happy with how Game 2 played out for the Cubs. A bad taste is left in my mouth after the bullpen couldn’t hold the close lead given to them by Ryan Dempster who threw a gem with 6 full innings of 1 run ball on three hits.
With the Cubs bats sluggish in their second game of the season it was going to come down to the wire for the bullpen as Dempster left the game after dominating the Braves at the plate, and it didn’t take long for it to happen. Dempster left the game in the 6th with a 2 run lead when he was pinch hit for as the Cubs tried to get their lack luster offense going in hopes of scoring some insurance runs to close out the game.
But the stale offense went down as quickly as it got up and Marshall was on his way to the mound for the 7th. Marshall who can be as bad as anyone else out of the pen came out with a strong showing and made work of the Braves offense in an easy peasy 1-2-3 stint. However another inning of dead bats lead to Grabow coming out in the 8th to get down in counts and up in runners on base. And it didn’t take long for former MVP Chipper Jones to launch a 2 run homer into left center putting the Cubs behind 3-2 with 3 outs to go.
Well we know how this story ends. Dead bats, bad pen, & a Cubs loss. Slow start to the season and if we don’t pick it up it is going to be a long year.
