The Brew Review: Episode 12 Kronenbourg 1664 Review

Hey everybody and welcome back to the Brew Review!

In today’s episode I review Kronenbourg’s 1664 as recommended to me by my Uncle Joe. He is a big fan of this beer, so much so that I guess he had to take a trip to France where it is brewed and imported to the U.S. from. But for me it is just another Euro beer that does nothing more than smell over the top in Noble hops and leaves little to the imagination in flavor. Sorry Uncle Joe.

On the nose Kronenbourg is ridiculous and over the top. You can smell it the moment you start to pour it and even when it is sitting on the table several inches from you. Hell maybe even several feet.

The taste of 1664 is ok, nothing special to me it has a bit of the standard Euro skunkiness to it from the hops and the fact that it comes in a green bottle doesn’t help much. It is very green which is the one quality that I like. It has kind of a fresh cut grass taste mixed with some pine needles.

All in all I give this beer a 3 out of 5. It is middle of the road. However I gives this review a 2 out of 5 as it lacked enthusiasm, I was feeling a bit tired after working my ass off around the house. I hope you guys enjoyed it enough and be sure to follow the link I posted in the video to the video explaining what noble hops are it is great.

Until next time Cheers.

    Adam,
No apologies necessary. I’ve found that most People that prefer PA’s and IPA’s don’t like most lagers as there just isn’t enough flavors to suit their palates. I, on the other hand like a sharp clean taste. I find 1664 a cut above most american lagers. Stella is too. I must say I’ve never seen a head as huge as the one in the video. I let the beer slide down the side of the glass for the first half of the beer. I had a couple of draughts in France and they were not what I remembered. I hope they haven’t changed the recipe.

I agree that Lagers won’t satisfy the taste buds of most Ale drinkers. It is more the fact that my palate just doesn’t gravitate toward the European beers. That strange bitterness and aroma is just too much for me.

But it was good to try none the less and it is definitely crisp and smooth.

I agree on the European beers for the most part. On our trip I had a few German beers; holsten, Konig, and Erdinger. Didn’t really take to the first two but Erdinger is a wheat beer in a 16.6 ounce BROWN bottle that I kind of liked. Rare for me to like a wheat.

I had this beer awhile ago and I have to say I like it and then I did not. I did not like my first taste but after that it grew on me and I enjoyed it.

Uncle Joe I have had those beers when I was over there and I enjoyed all of them.

all in all a good beer.

      Jason,
Glad you liked it. I’ll have to have a few this weekend since all this talking about it has got me fired up.

1664 huh? well I drank this beer when I was In France and I’ll have to say it was the best beer that I had while I was there. Alcohol content was very high but not any thing special as far as taste.

Let me point out your first mistake was buying Kronenbourg in a bottle. Kronenbourg is a fantastic beer and in my opinion must be enjoyed from a tap or a can poured into a glass. I recommend you try it again though next time not from a bottle! It really is a completely different experience!

      Scott,

I will give it another shot if I can find it in a can. I don’t think there are to many places around here that have it in can. And I haven’t ever seen it on draft.

        Adam,
I just had it on draught in south Florida at a place called the Yardhouse. One of those places that have a million beers on tap. I must admit it tasted better than the last bottle I had, which was a disappointment even for me. I have seen it in cans down here and will try to get a hold of it.

Picked up a few tall cans while I was out and about this afternoon and am enjoying one ice cold in a pint glass that I had kept in the freezer… what a DELICIOUS BEER! Let me know if you ever do get a chance to enjoy it out of a can or on tap : )
