The Brew Review: Episode 13 Hoegaarden Wit Beer Review

What’s up brewcrew? Welcome back the the Brew Review. In today’s episode we taste Hoegaarden Wit Beer, pronounced who not ho.

Hoegaarden is a Belgium style wit or white beer that is brewed with a mix of barley, wheat, orange peel, and coriander resembling a process of brewing that once used a mix of spices called gruit that was the base for flavoring beer before hops came to Europe. Hoegaarden is very crisp and refreshing and would be absolutely great on a hot summer day, but the spices are a bit too much for my style. I am not a fan of spiced beers however, so my opinion is a little biased.

Some of the characteristics you will find with Hoegaarden are a natural cloudiness from the wheat and what the brewer calls subtle coriander and orange flavors. I don’t agree that they are subtle. I found that the orange and coriander are the dominate flavors in the beer, and although it is light and refreshing drinking 4 or 5 of these would probably beat up on your palate unless you are accustomed to drinking spiced beers.

I hope you enjoyed the review today and will take a minute to visit our store by clicking the blue store button at the top of the site. We only have one tshirt up there right now, but more are coming soon. Thanks for watching the video and leave a comment below telling me your thoughts about Hoegaarden, wit beers, or spiced beers in general.

Adam very nicely done. Love the new shirt, can’t wait to sport it. As for the beer, this one I do enjoy alot. I have to say I have had this one on a hot summer day and I can’t wait to try it again.

Now as for the sports side (Big Sox fan) where is the love. Can’t wait to see the Hawks dominate the preds and go into the next round.

    Cheers

Good job on this one. The cloudiness reminds me of the beer I had in France. Erdinger. It too is a wheat beer and I bet the orange peel is in that one too. I might have to try the “Who”.

      Thanks UJ!

I am glad you said you weren’t going to try the Hoe. That would have been weird.

It is pretty good. But like I said I don’t think I could drink a lot of it because the coriander is a bit much for me.

Amazing how great minds think alike. I had written the Hoe and decided against it. I also agree on not being able to drink too many of the wheat beers. I reserve BL for that purpose.

I don’t think all wheat beers are like that. I can drink plenty of Bell Oberon because it lacks the spice and sticks with the citrus flavors.

But I know what you mean. BL is great for all day drinking.

Good review, Adam — although I was disappointed to learn the beer is pronounced WHO garden, not HOE garden, ’cause I always like to say “I’m heading home to kick it with some of my Hoes…”

Anyway… I love this beer. This is my all-time fav — not that I’m an expert — but it’s just so refreshing and satisfying. And it’s great with ruffled/rippled potato chips and guacamole dip, IMVHO, and of course NFL football.

I just ordered some of the specially designed Hoegaarden beer glasses so I can maximize my Hoe time.

Keep up the good work, and cheers to all.

    ;-D
