Remember last year when it felt like Randy Wells would come out to the mound and pitch great game after great game, but the lousy Cubs offense couldn’t give him any run support at all so although his stats looked great he couldn’t get a win to save his life? Well, this year Cubs lefty Tom Gorzelanny has got the same problem.
Last night the Cubs 5 game win streak came to an end with Tom Gorzelanny on the mound making his 4th start of the year. Gorzelanny went 7 full innings gave up 2 runs on 3 hits, an outing most would qualify as a gem, but with very little offensive support racked up another notch in the loss column.
On the year Gorzelanny has pitched 22 innings in 4 games so about 5.5 inning per game, a more than respectable number. The really impressive part is that his ERA is under 2.50 and his WHIP is under 1.1. Those are the kind of stats you see coming from the ace on many teams in the league, but for Gorzelanny all it has meant is a record of 0 – 3. We need to get this guy a well deserved win.
Now we can’t complain too much as Cubs fans, although our offense struggled last night and we are probably on our way to driving Gorzelanny to the mad house the Cubs are doing fairly well after getting off to a really slow start. The Cubs are sitting 3.5 games back from division rivals and smoking hot St. Louis Cardinals in the standings. A position that I am comfortable with this early in the season. As the weather warms up in Chicago I would be willing to bet we see the performance in players like Soriano and Zambrano continue to grow and the Cubs might have the opportunity to make a run at this division after all.
And make a run for the division is what the Cubs will need to see any kind of playoff chance. The NL Central division is by far the worst division in baseball right now, you have the Cards that look decent and a bunch of mediocre teams below them fighting for second place. Although second place is generally a good place to be sitting when it comes to fighting for the Wild Card the Central division looks to have a very slim chance of being anywhere near that competition. The other divisions are just stronger this year.
But that is all I have for my Cubs Chatter today. Be sure to leave a comment below and let me know what you think about Gorzelanny, The Cubs playoff chances, or anything you want.
