Well its 2010 and another accusation of doping arises against seven (7) time Tour De France winner Lance Armstrong. In a telephone interview with ESPN Floyd Landis a former teammate of Armstrong and admitted doper, accused not only Armstrong of doping, but his coach, and several other high profile American riders.
During Landis’ interview with ESPN he went on to explain he has sent numerous emails with these implications to cycling’s governing bodies and anti-doping officials. ESPN reported Landis sent an email to USA Cycling President Steve Johnson stating, “that he first used EPO on Bruyneel’s (long time sports director for U.S. Postal Service cycling team) advice the following summer while training for the Tour of Spain, that he obtained the drug directly from Armstrong, and that he started using HGH that he bought from a team trainer in Valencia during that same training period.”
Landis went onto explain he paid a doctor $10,000 cash to perform a blood-transfusion. Landis also claims this doctor worked with numerous riders on the circuit including Armstrong. ESPN also reports that in 2004, Landis’ doctor, was “convicted of sporting fraud and abusing his medical license by an Italian court, but later succeeded in having that judgment reversed on appeal.” Landis also said he had personal conversation with Armstrong on the efficiency of the banned substances. Landis stated he spent upwards of $90,000 a year on doping.
Is Floyd Landis the Jose Canseco of cycling? I do have to say preponderance of evidence (the likely hood that this guy is telling the truth) is leaning the way of Armstrong doping. The truth lies somewhere in the middle. Armstrong vehemently denies Landis’ allegation and stated he wouldn’t even address the ridiculousness of it. I do have to say, say it ain’t so Lance….because the idea of another professional athlete using sports enhancing drugs is dis-heartening and I hope this Landis character is just trying to grab his last headline. What are your thoughts???
