Finally…A Professional Sports Franchise With Some Class!
So in case you haven’t heard the New England Patriots are purging the world, or at least the New England area, of Aaron Hernandez’s number 81 football jersey. The Patriots announced Saturday and Sunday, 7/7/2013 & 7/8/2013, as a Hernandez jersey buyback, pledging to give away brand new Patriots jerseys in exchange for your used #81 Hernandez. You might be thinking, am I trading for a Eugene Wilson jersey? No my friend the jersey swap is for any Patriots player. However the exchange only applies to jerseys purchased at PatriotsProshop.com or their physical store location in Foxsboro.
According to www.cnn.com, Patriots team spokesman Stacey James stated, “We know that children love wearing their Patriots jerseys, but may not understand why parents don’t want them wearing their Hernandez jerseys anymore.” “We hope this opportunity to exchange those jerseys at the Patriots ProShop for another player’s jersey will be well received by parents.”
Finally, a professional sports franchise does the right thing. They immediately fire the player, admonish him, and attempt to expunge him from their storied franchise. Although just check ebay… Under the search terms “Aaron Hernandez jersey” there were 789 listings. All ranging from a few bucks to $1500. Really?
Would you let “Johnny” run the neighborhood in a (alleged) murder’s jersey? How many of you are rocking a Ray Lewis, Donte Stallworth, etc…? What if your favorite player committed a heinous crime, would you still wear the jersey? I’d love to hear your responses in our comments section.
