Lady and Gentleman…”Start Your Engine….” The switch is flipped and the engine fails to fire! That’s exactly is what is happening to NASCAR. The engines are failing to light any fires and fans are showing it many different ways. Ticketnews.com is reporting the Brick Yard 400 held at the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway was the lowest number of ticket’s sold for a race “ever” at 140,000. Now admit it you watched about 15 laps and realized the same thing I did….Independence Day was on TNT and you’d rather be watching that!

Are people shying away from the Sprint Cup Championship Series, NASCAR’s, driving elite? The answer is….”YES!” The Brick Yard 400, once a powerhouse for revenue, is reportedly grossing under 10 million from a high in the 30’s. International Motor Speedway (IMS) is also discounting ticket prices, to get people into the gates. There’s only one problem, PEOPLE STILL AREN’T COMING! The Chicago Tribune wrote “NASCAR estimated that attendance has fallen in 14 of the first 19 events.”

Hell…People aren’t even watching it. ESPN is reporting a 13% drop in television viewers as well. Let’s face it, times are tough, recession, people out of work, and prices on everything seem to keep going up from milk to meat. I still think that if NASCAR produced something that was worth (A) going to…and (B) watching, fan’s reaction would be different. Until then, I’ll keep watching Will Smith kick some alien butt! And BTW… I just love that speech Bill Pulman gives!

How many people would think Denny Hamlin would be #1 in the standings with his blistering five (5) Sprint Cup wins, seven (7), top five finishes, and seven (7) top ten finishes? Well one question begets a couple others. Did you know Jimmie Johnson is in second, 140 points behind 1st, with four (4) wins, seven (7) in the top five, and ten (10) finishes in the top 10?

Your probably asking your self, well whose #1? The answer is Kevin Harvick. 2010’s NASCAR season has seen Harvick put up only one (1) win and he hasn’t even won a pole position! I know its crazy, how can a guy be #1, if he has one (1) win? Its called consistency ladies and gentleman…. Harvick has managed to put himself near the front at the end nearly every race. Harvick is HOT right now, maybe not in the win column, but he has finished five (5) times in the top 5, without winning and five (5) more finishes in the top 10!

FYI…Harvick has never finished better than 3rd at the end of the NASCAR season. Public spats with The Home Depot’s Joey Lagano, seems only to fire this guy up! Does Harvick needs some good luck to keep this streak up because he has the No. 48 of Jimmie Johnson breathing in his review mirror. Johnson will stop at nothing to claim another Sprint Cup Championship. There will be more to follow on this story as the NASCAR season evolves. Your thoughts and comments are encouraged below…

This week in sports:

The Cubs struggled early leaving their pitchers out to dry, but the bats came back to end the week strong taking down The D’backs in 2 straight. The Cubs play today to close out the series.

The Blackhawks took a poop on the ice in their first game against the Canucks with a pitiful 5-1 loss. Better come ready to play this series or be ready to go home Hawks.

The White Sox…Who cares?

Kyle Busch won the Sprint Cup race in Richmond and Jeff Gordon place second, but the real news is that Jimmy Johnson finally fell out of the top spot in the standings with a 10 place finish.

So…Does NASCAR suck? Earlier in the year before the season starte we wrote a post entitled 5 reasons why NASCAR sucks, and funnily enough it has been one of the most popular posts on the site to date. Now we have to ask the question; Does NASCAR suck?

The reality is that NASCAR’s attendance at the nine (9) races has been down significantly when compared to years past. Watching any of this season’s races, you can see gaping holes in seats where just a few years ago, a sea of people were once standing.

Yahoo Sports reported at Michigan International Speedway, “MIS president Roger Curtis was thankful that even 100,000 fans, or about 30,000 fewer than normal, showed up.”

But does fans not showing up for races mean NASCAR has lost its appeal or are fans not showing up for monetary reasons such as the great recession that we are in now.

Jayski has attendance statistics for every race so far this year compared to years past. There is a significant downward trend but does that mean NASCAR sucks, yes and no.

In my opinion track attendance and TV rating are down both because NASCAR has lost its appeal with it’s fans, and the economy has hurt it a bit. But the popular baseball, football, NBA, and hockey venues are still drawing huge crowds in the same economy.

So what is to blame for NASCAR’s woes?

Well, over the past nine races, Jimmie Johnson, has won three time, Denny Hamlin has won two, and yesterday’s race almost had Jaime McMurray posting his second win of the season (he was passed by Kevin Harvick for the win). So it looks like competition is thin.

The Talladega 500 set the record for the most lead changes in a single race. (Which was exciting for me as I watched the race because Michael Waltrip actually recorded a lead lap), but it ended with the same old same old faces at the front of the pack.

What NASCAR needs is a scandal, I’m not talking Tiger big, but maybe a quote un quote “bad boy” needs to come out of the shadows and revive the days of Dale Earnhardt.

Do you remember the old days?

Weren’t the old days of NASCAR more fun when Tony Stewart was punching every camera man he came into contact with? Weren’t the days more fun when drivers were throwing helmets at passing cars after a wreck? Weren’t the days more fun when the infield was a gigantic three day party.

I miss NASCAR. And until they can create the “NWO” (old wrestling analogy) bad boys who will do anything for a win attitude and bring back the edge that was NASCAR I think they will continue to lose fans.

So in short, yes NASCAR sucks. It lost that edge that made it great, it lost the competitiveness, with running 4 time Champ Jimmy Johnson looking like he is on his way to his 5th championship, and it won’t win us good ole boys back until it makes us feel the fire that once was NASCAR.

Kahne is joining the elite ranks of Hendrick Motorsports for the 2012 race season. He is joined by like of teammates Jeff Gordon, Dale Earnhardt Jr., and Jimmie Johnson. Hendrick Motorsports has boasted Winston and Sprint Cup Championships in 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2001, 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2009. Regardless of your thoughts; this is an impressive two decades. With Hendrick having a star studded stable of drivers he puts his best foot forward for many more Sprint Cup Championships.

Does any other owner have the talent or the resources to dethrone Rick Hendrick? Right now, I would say NO. The signing of Kasey Kahne to Hendrick Motorsports is like signing another all-star to the Yankees. “Kahne, who turned 30 on April 10, is an 11-time winner in the Cup Series. Now in his seventh full-time season at NASCAR’s elite level, Kahne also has earned 16 pole positions, 43 top-five finishes and 79 top-10s on the tour.” Quote from: Nascar

Rick Hendrick picked up another powerful pawn in the chess game that is NASCAR.

Tiger Woods was having a rough day yesterday, he was on a slippery slope of bogies and he got caught swearning at himself a few times by live TV microphones. Which brings me to the question, do we really need to have everything mic’d up all the time?

These guys are in the heat of competition, they are excited, frustrated, and pretty much standing by themelves out side of the gallery that generally can’t hear the swears they mutter under there breath. So is it fair for us to expect them to be alter boys out there biting their lips when they have a bad shot, or is time we get some of he mics off the playing field.

This isn’t just an incidient that happens to Tiger, there was a big to do when it happened to Shaun White and his coach throwing out F bombs during a converstaion before Shaun when out into the half pipe to do his victory lap after winning the Gold at the games. These guys knew mics were around, but didn’t know mics where right on top of them for that converstaion. They were expressing joy in a way many grown men, especially those in a high intensity situation do, with a little vulgarity to keep the momentum and energy up.

So is it right? Who is to blame? And when are TV stations going to learn that not everything said in a game, or tournament needs to be broadcast to the world.

I say let the players play, get the mics off of them unless you are interviewing them. Expect men to act like men and then we won’t have to deal with the new stories about a grown man using the word fuck.

Let me know what you think about everything being mic’d up and going out live on TV by commenting below. Be sure to subscribe to our site by clicking the email icon at the top right hand of the screen.

This years NASCAR season has just begun, but already 4 year incumbent champion Jimmy Johnson has won 3 of the 5 completed races, and is sitting pretty in the top 10 as he waits for the Chase to roll around where he consistently dominates the field. Which brings up the question, at least in my mind, will Jimmy Johnson end his career as the best stock car driver of all time?

In Jimmy’s now 9 year career he has won 50+ races and 4 straight championships, a feat never accomplished before. Throw on top of that the fact that outside of his rookie year in which he only raced in 3 races he has never finished outside of the top 5 in the cup series points standings. I think it is inevitable that he will be amongst the best NASCAR drivers when he finishes, but I am not sure anyone will ever classify him as the best.

So what stops Jimmy from earning the moniker of best ever? The fact that racing has changed so much? The car of the future? The Chase? or do you think he will earn that title?

Let me know in the comments below.

For most of us the idea of getting millions of dollars to play a game is unfathomable since we weren’t granted the gift of eye hand coordination or the 7 feet of height that are required to play pro sports. However for the pros; making millions and spending them is easy peasy. And it seems like spending them is their top priority.

If you haven’t noticed from all the videos and links I reference from Yahoo Sports, that is where I get a lot of my daily dose of sports, and today they did it again by showing me just how frivolous the average professional athlete is with his money. According to the article 80% of professional football players are on the verge of bankruptcy just 2 years after they retire, and 60% of NBA players within 5 years.

It was to say the least amusing to see how players the likes of Scottie Pippen were able to blow 120 million and now sit on nothing. Guess No Tippen Pippen found a way to spend his money without adding gratuity.

Check out the whole article here. http://sports.yahoo.com/top/news?slug=ys-investopediamoneyloss031010&prov=yhoo&type=lgns

In this weeks race at Hotlanta Carl Edwards got his revenge, but was the reward worth the risk? Dave and I have had this conversation a bunch of times on the site already, and he scored 1 point in the debate that allowing the the drivers to police themselves was going to turn NASCAR into a demolition derby. Edwards intentional spin of Keselowski sent him sailing in the air flipping upside down, then righting himself only to hit a wall. I am personally all for letting the drivers settle their issues on the track; in my book exchanging a little paint makes the sport more fun, but when is enough enough? Spinning someone at 180+ on a car that you know is pretty flip happy seems to be taking it a bit to far. The driver could have been seriously hurt, the amount of air that thing got left potential for fans in the grandstand to be hurt, and I can’t see what the reward is?

I would like to see revenge be an aggressive pass that squeezes a drive close the wall forcing them to slow down off the pace, not spinning them at 180 and hoping for the best. What is your take on it?

I’m sure that adoption issues slip the average person’s mind on any given day. However in light of recent additions to our FanBrew Family, I thought it particularly interesting to research Athletes influence in adoption.

Did you know….

3 time NFL Pro Bowl selection Dante Culpepper was one of at least fifteen adopted children of the late Emma Culpepper. Dante Culpper said this of his adoptive mother. “She was an angel, not only to me but to everyone she came in contact with, and she was always on a mission to help people,” the NFL quarterback said Sunday. “If not for her I don’t know where I’d be.” – Dante Culpepper ,

Dante Culpepper & His Mom.

6 time NFL Pro Bowl Selection and NFL Hall of Famer Erick Dickerson was the adoptive child of his great-great aunt Viola Dickerson, whom he calls “Mamma,” adopted him as an infant because his birth mother, who also lived with Viola, was too young to care for him adequately. Although he and his birth mother remain close, it was Viola that made the key decisions in Eric’s early life.

Eric Dickerson

2 time Olympic Gold medalist, Greg Louganis, “the life story of Gregory Efthimios Louganis began in San Diego on Jan. 29, 1960, when he was born to parents of Samoan and Northern European ancestry. Both were only 15, and they gave up their child. He was adopted at nine months by Peter and Frances Louganis, who had already adopted an older daughter .”

Greg Louganis

3 time Cy Young Award Winner, World Series Champion, and MLB Hall of Famer Jim Palmer had an adoptive father.

Jim Palmer

Olympic Gold Medalist and Figure skating Icon Scott Hamilton was adopted.

Scott Hamilton: “I was adopted at six weeks old by two school teachers. My father was a professor of biology at Bowling Green State University. My mother was a second grade school teacher. As my skating got more expensive, she became an associate professor at Bowling Green in the home economics department. I was adopted because my parents had trouble having children. My sister is from my parents, and my brother and I were both adopted. I grew up blessed with loving parents and a great household.” – Scott Hamilton

Scott Hamilton

NFL Hall of Famer Dan Marino held or still owns most NFL records. He is an adoptive parent. “Dan Marino seen here with his family, including adopted members.”

Dan Marino

NBA Legend, 5 time NBA Champion, and NBA Hall of Famer Magic Johnson, Named one of NBA’s 50 Greatest Players is an adoptive Parent of Elisa in 1995.

Magic Johnson

MLB Super Star, named to 24 All Star Selections, 4th in all time home Runs, and MLB Hall of Famer, Willie “Say Hey Kid” Mayes was the adoptive father of Michael Hayes.
