Hello everybody and welcome back to the Brew Review!

I have got another tasting from the great state of Indiana thanks to the folks @worldclass that put together the awesome Indiana sampler pack. So relax and enjoy a brew while and read on to find out the finer points of Oaken Barrel Brewing Company’s Indiana Amber Ale.

About the Indiana Amber Ale

The Indiana Amber Ale is a “Hoosier Style” Red Ale brewed in Greenwood Indiana. At 5.3% ABV and 28 IBUs the Indiana Amber is a combination of caramel malts and hoppy bitterness with a medium body and great taste.

My Review

The Pour

The Indiana Amber’s pour doesn’t quite match its name. It definitely has some red in it, but I found the beer poured a a light brown more than it did red. The head was thin maybe a fingers width and dissipated quickly and left no lacing at all.

The Nose

The nose was definitely strong and pleasant. The caramel and biscuity malts dominated the nose, it was difficult to find much else in there, but if you put your nose far enough in you will pick up a hint of the hops.

The Palate

Intriguing to say the least. Up front you get the malt flavors right away, the caramel seemed to take a back seat to the biscuity flavors. The hops are very mild and give you a subtle tingle as you swallow. Out of nowhere comes a delicious red apple flavor that I loved. Followed on the finish with the sweetness of that caramel malt. I wish these flavors had come together rather than run there separate ways. In fact if that had happened this would have been one of my favorite beers to date.

The Indiana Amber is awesome and if you are into medium bodied beers with a hint of sweetness that also give us hop heads something to talk about you will find it here. Given a little more structure this beer could have been outstanding. I would definitely put this on my short list at the liquor store and recommend you pick it up if you can find it.

The Rating

4 out of 5 stars

With my ratings make sure you consider a grading scale 4 out of 5 is an 80% or achieving mastery.

The Fireside Nut Brown Ale is the closest thing we have had to a dark beer so far on this site. As you can tell dark beers aren’t something I drink to often, but I need to continuously expand my palate and get into them. So let’s kick it off with an easy one.

About Leinenkugel

I am sure you have all heard the story by now about Jacob Leinenkugel on TV and radio so lets just get some facts in here. Leinenkugel’s brewery was founded in 1867 and is the 7th oldest brewery in the United States. Leini’s resides in Chippewa Falls, WI and is known for making some outrageously flavor full beers. I am sure you have spent a day or to in the North woods.

About Fireside Nut Brown Ale

The Fireside Nut Brown Ale is a popular seasonal brew from Leinenkuglel. The beer is English malted amber ale and is supposed to give off flavors maple, chocolate, hazelnut, and caramel. Fireside has 4.9% ABV and nearly no bitterness with only 13 IBUs.

My Review

From the picture you can see that this beer pours a really nice dark red / brown color with about a pinky’s width of head on the top of it. I expected a little more head from this beer. The nose didn’t offer to much flavor, but this beer doesn’t have the fruit like flavors of most the IPAs and lagers I have tasted on the site.

As I drank the beer I found really big coffee flavors coming through, which I found to be extremely pleasing, it reminded me of drinking a cup of coffee by the fire. Exactly what you want this beer to do. What baffled me was that I got no roasted or burnt nut flavors. Not sure how you can have the word nut in your beer and not have a strong presence of any nuts. Fireside has a medium body and it finished well leaving my mouth a little dry malty flavor that I liked.

The small head didn’t survive the drinking process and didn’t leave any lacing down the glass. Something that I am starting to care a little more about. I don’t know why, it doesn’t change the taste, but I like the foam to sit on the sides up my glass to make it look like a beer.

All in all this beer is worth trying if you are a light colored beer drinker that would want something dark. The medium body and coffee flavors could be a decent segway into the world of full bodied dark beers. Not the best beer I have had, but if it is around drink it up.

If you have had the Fireside Nut Brown Ale beer sure to tell me what you thought of it in the comments below.

Fat Tire is uber popular right now. 6 months ago you had probably never heard of it, and now it sits prominently displayed at the entrance of most liquor stores and on taps at local bars. So I figured let’s give it a go and see what is to be said, I think this beer really polarizes people. You either hate it or love it.

About New Belgium Brewery

New Belgium Brewery was founded in 1991 by home brewer Jeff Lebesch. The brewery from Fort Collins Colorado is at least in my area is most notably known for it’s amber ale Fat Driver, which I am reviewing here. But there seasonal beer Hoptoberfest is one of my favorites.

About Fat Tire

Fat Tire is a Belgian Amber Ale that was inspired by electrical engineer become brewer Jeff Lebesch’s bike trip through Belgium. Fat tire is created with a host of flavors, most notably it biscuity malt and hops. Fat Tire is made up of 5.2% ABV and available in the 9-10 dollar range at liquor stores.

My Review

When you pour Fat Tire you are going to notice two things. 1 the rich amber color and 2 the think fluffy cream colored head. As you drink the beer that head dissolves into a small ring that laces the glass on its way down. Definitely a nice characteristic of the beer.

If you give the beer a smell, you aren’t going to notice much. Fat tire definitely lacks in the fruit and flower components that so many other beers pick up on.

Drinking the beer is pleasant it is smooth going down, but you will notice that the beer feels a bit flat. Don’t toss it because you think you have a bad bottle. That is how they all taste. The beer is wheaty in my opinion, but I am still learning. This is supposed to be biscuity texture, and I definitely get that now that I am aware of it. Fat Tire has a little hops that leaves the edges of your tongue with a bitter taste. This beer has no fruit flavors at all, at least not on my pallet, Dave you might like it. I would say this beer throroughly enjoyable.

It’s full body and smooth finish make it an enjoyable drink whenever you are craving something good.

Have you had Fat Tire? Do you love it or hate it? Let us know in the comments below.
