Whats up internet? Welcome back to the Brew Review. It today’s edition I taste a New Grist Beer.

New Grist is a Sorghum Rice beer that is absolutely Gluten free. Sometimes you have to go out of your way to try new things and although I didn’t have high hopes for how this beer was going to taste I definitely wanted to give it a try just to say that I have had it. So let’s get into it and see what it brings to the table.

The pour of is ridiculous. Grist is so clear it is almost color less. You will get a head the dissipates to nothing as quickly as it forms. I am not sure it you can tell from the picture or not, but the clarity is crazy.

On the nose Grist is also very disappointing. It is very sweet and dry. It reminds me of a mixture of my Mr. Beer home brew and a Sapporo. Which I guess is good and bad as Sapporo is another rice beer.

The taste of the New grist on the other hand is not good at all. In fact I don’t think I will be going on a limb today when I say that this beer justs tastes bad. In fact it is much like my home brew in that the lack of flavor and over carbonation make it almost completely undrinkable.. I am not sure what else is really going on in this beer. I just don’ t like it. If I force my self to concetrate which you should never have to do while drinking be I kind of get a floral sweet and strangley bitter tast. I don’t like it at all. Major pass.

This will by far be the lowest score ever given on the site, but Lakefront Brewery in Milwaukee you missed the boat big time 1.0 out of 5 stars. Dont’ drink this even if you can’t have Gluten.

Not because it is rare or because it is simply amazing, but because it is a homebrew contest winner. Meaning that Sam has taken the homebrewer and given him a little taste of the lime light, which is really cool.

But anyway, on to the beer. The lemon pepper saison is a light ale brewed with vanilla, spices, and the grains of paradise. Each component is pretty well balanced which I was happy to find. On the pour the Saison is a nice Golden color a little darker than a standard domestic lager. A one finger foam head sits atop the beer, but it dissipates quickly to a thin ring that follows you down the glass.

The nose on the Saison is pretty complex. When I first stick my nose in it I get some nice dry toasty malts. Swirl the glass around a bit and you will pick up a big citrus note and a lighter spicy notes. I really like it.

The taste is quite simple compared to the nose. The bottle describes it pretty well. A taste of vanilla up front then a tart spicy finish. I enjoyed this brew quite a bit and would recommend you pick some up if you can find it. This is a beer I got from Robbie and I don’t know how or where it is available locally. So if you know be sure to drop me a line on where to get it.

3.0 out of 5 stars.

Hey internet,

Sorry that I have been gone from the site lately not posting about the wonderful world of beer, but I have been extremely busy at work and with getting my house ready for the marketplace. That doesn’t mean that I haven’t been celebrating craft beer week with amazing craft beer, it just means that I haven’t had the time to sit down and write anything about it.

So I thought I would take a few minutes today to talk a little bit about my recent adventure is beer. I actually have been out and about to a few restraunts, bars, and breweries in the last few weeks so lets talk about where to get great beer in Indiana.

First and foremost if you live in NWI you need to go to Martini’s in Valpo. Their beer list is absolutely amazing. Microbrews, craft brews, and bombers are all over the place for prices that are more than reasonable. Last week I spent the night with a buddy at Martini’s and drank Stones’ Arrogant Bastard Ale which was just amazing, followed it up with a Belgium style blond ale that I can’t remember the name of, had a Robert the Bruce from 3floyds, and finished the night with some Mad Hatter IPA. Not only does Martini’s have a great selection of beer, but they want you to learn about it as well and offer up their beerology program which happens the last Thursday of every month. You can go eat great food that is paired with the perfect beer and learn about the style, flavors, and why it goes well with that meal. A great program that I am definitely interested in participating in and maybe even trying to sponsor.

Next stop is out to Bartlett’s in Beverly Shores on route 12 just before you reach Michigan City. Bartlett’s is owned by the same people that run Miller Bakery Cafe and Bistro 157. The food is phenom and the beer list is to match. Bartletts had about 5 beers on draft but they offered a beer list of 15 -20 or more seasonal and craft brews. The small shop with maybe 12 wooden tables with picnic bench seating had gourmet food and great beer. I had pork two ways; bbq’d pulled pork over grits and fried green tomatoes and a pork chop with fresh veggies that I washed down with a stellar Magic Hat #9 Pale Ale. Be sure to get out to Bartletts for great food and beer.

Finally we went to Shoreline Brewery in Michigan city. I sat down with Phil, Scott, & the ladies and had a great time conversing over Indiana made microbrews. Truth be told I wasn’t actually to impressed with the beers at Shoreline. I was hoping for more especially since they are older that most of the breweries in the area and I have heard many a great thing about them. But in my opinion they way over use hops. I felt like every beer they had to offer was over hopped except for their dark beers. And although I brought my camera to take photos, I forgot the memory card at home and couldn’t get any to share with you. So rather that writing out my reviews of each beer I tasted I thought I would just tell you my favorite and advise you to go get some. So here goes nothing.

Shoreline’s Smokestack Porter

The Porter was in my opinion the best beer there, although Scott may say it is the dopplebock I just don’t care for that style. I found that even in the sampler glass the Porter had a great color and good head retention as well as lacing. It was extremely light bodied and plays a trick on you because it looks so dark and thick and you expect a medium to full bodied beer. The palate had subtle hints of toffee which made for a really great tasting beer that had a crazy smooth finish. All in all it was the most on style of all of their beers and definitely the most drinkable. I really like the Smokestack and give it 3.75 out of 5 stars.

Happy American Craft Beer Week! Now to celebrate by pouring yourself a great American craft beer, stop whatever you are doing and go buy a beer. Even if it is only 8:00 AM, it is time to celebrate. Well maybe not, you do have all week. But I do challenge each and everyone of you to go out to the liquor store or local brewery this week, walk past the domestic light, and pick up something from a small craft brewery that you have never tried before.

So what is American Craft Beer Week?

According To AmericanCraftBeerWeek.org

“

Beer lovers, craft brewers, homebrewers, beer distributors, retailers, and even U.S. Congress are all making special plans for the annual American Craft Beer Week taking place across the country May 17-23. The “Mother of All Beer Weeks, ” organized by the Brewers Association, celebrates small and independent craft brewers and highlights all that America loves about craft beer. In 2006, the week became the largest national effort focusing on American craft brewers and remains so today.

“American Craft Beer Week has become a cherished tradition, making this annual celebration a great chance to toast craft brewers and to celebrate the advanced beer culture here in the United States,” stated Julia Herz, a spokesperson for the Brewers Association.

Download a high resolution version of this image.

A House of Representatives resolution, H.R. 1297 (PDF file), was introduced on April 22 to recognize and support the goals and ideals of American Craft Beer Week. This Congressional effort highlights the valuable role that small and independent craft brewers play through community citizenry, economic contributions—including the estimated 100,000 jobs in the industry–and the resurgence in a rich brewing culture not seen since before Prohibition.

Also, in the works for the 2010 American Craft Beer Week are special brewery tours, beer and food pairing events, special release craft beers and festivals all across the country. Participating breweries are encouraging beer enthusiasts to sign the Declaration of Beer Independence, an official document to support America’s small and independent craft brewers, which is available on the American Craft Beer Week website and Facebook page. And, both breweries and homebrewers alike will brew a special recipe called American Craft Beer Wheat to celebrate.

Since its inception in 2006, American Craft Beer Week has continued to attract interest and support from beer enthusiasts and media, with more than 200 breweries formally participating in 2009.
Hey everybody,

Yesterday I had a good time discussing favorite Summer beers with our friends on Facebook so today I would just like to find out what everybody’s favorite style of beer is?

Do you enjoy a huge Imperial Stout or maybe a crisp Pilsner? Personally I love the gigantic IPAs, the Imperials with 9-10% ABV. Which is why this post is sitting next to what I think is the best IPA on the planet, Dogfishhead’s 90 Minute IPA.

So take a minute in the comment below to tell me what your favorite style of beer is, and what you favorite beer in that style is.

The Pour:

Sam’s Latitude 48 poured well darker than I expected it too, the color was actually quite impressive; a very dark copper with a sort of burnt amber look to it. The carbonation builds quickly to a big head on top of the beer that starts to dissipate slowly into a ring of foam with lacing down the sides of the glass.

The Nose:

A very strong nose filled with bright pine needle aromas and very sweet malts. The hops are the most notable note, but the malts really had some depth to them. The biggest malt aroma was that of caramel, but the sweetness of them almost made me think of chocolate. If you swish it around and get the head built back up you can even pick up the stinky earthy aroma, which is really weird a cross between dirt and mushrooms and kinda gross.

The Palate:

Wow! This beer is very complex and well balanced. The dominant hops that came across first and strongest on the nose take a back seat to an upfront malt flavor. The deep caramel malts hit you first and then the hops come into play. The bitterness is definitely there, but as the flavor mixes in your mouth it tastes more like a resiny pine needles that it does straight hops or straight caramel malts. The balance is outstanding. Then at the end of the swallow the hops take over with some citrus notes and a short bitter finish that lingers on the tongue.

In my opinion Sam just may a great play in the affordable IPA range because well all of Sam’s beers are affordable. With so many breweries making imperial and double IPAs that come in at 12.99 a six pack Latitude will surely please your palate without killing your wallet. 4.25 out of 5 stars be sure to pick up Latitude 48 when you get the chances.
